Generation 1-2
I'm squeezing Generation 1 and Generation 2 together for several reasons. And definitely not just to keep the PC BOX theme consistent...
For starters, the Generation 1 and 2 games cannot connect to any other Generations, only themselves. Pokémon caught in these games are stuck in there forever, which isn't very appealing to me as a Shiny Hunter. In addition, as of the time of writing this, I don't have a console to actually play these games.
While I do not have physical copies for Gen 1 and Gen 2...I do have them on my 3DS/2DS consoles as Virtual Console Exclusives. They were ported right to the 3DS and 2DS systems, where the Pokémon can be put into Pokémon Bank and sent to other games! I would like to own them one day, but it's not a priority.
Finally, Generation 1 (Red, Blue, Yellow) didn't have Shiny Pokémon...kind of. Due to the nature of the game's code, Shiny Pokémon were determined by their individual stats at the time, known as "DVs". Because Generation 1 and Generation 2 shared this system, Pokémon transfered from Generation 1 could theoretically be shiny, except not really. The only Pokémon that are coded to be Shiny are Stationary Encounters (Snorlax, Legendary Birds), Gift Pokémon (Starter Pokémon, Eevee, Fossils, Game Counter), In-Game Trades, and Fishing Encounters.
You can also use coding exploits to...force Pokémon to be Shiny. The Legtimacy of these Pokémon is dubious, which is reasonable to think, but I have done this and I will note which ones are glitched to be Shiny.
Regardless, Generation 1 consists of Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, and Pokémon Yellow. Being the start of the games, these are fairly simplistic. Set in Kanto, where your goal is to be the Best Like No One Ever Was. Generation 2 consists of Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Crystal. Still rather simplistic, but definitely a step up from the previous Generation. Set mostly in Hoenn, your goal is still to be the Best Like No One Ever Was. They are, all together, quite charming from age, if a little frustrating in terms of dated mechanics.
